One budget, three cards
Maya, Ben and Sam each spend $2,000 a month and pay their cards in full. This example follows $24,000 of ordinary eligible purchases over a year, without welcome offers or introductory promotions.
All three want to pay less for a trip. Maya uses Capital One Venture, Ben uses Citi Double Cash and Sam uses Discover it Miles. The earning rules are card-specific; the flight quotes in Maya’s example are hypothetical.
Venture: 48,000 miles
Maya’s purchases earn 2 miles per dollar, producing 4,000 miles per month and 48,000 per year. At the 1-cent travel value illustrated by Capital One, that is $480 toward eligible travel. Subtracting the $95 annual fee gives $385 of modeled reward benefit, before other card benefits.
Maya first compares covering a recent eligible travel purchase with an award booking. Suppose a flight she wants costs $450, while a partner award costs 30,000 miles plus $50. Assume her account shows a 1:1 transfer ratio to that partner. The award replaces $400 of cash cost: $450 minus $50. Dividing by the 30,000 bank miles used gives about 1.33 cents per mile.
Using 30,000 Venture miles for a travel credit would instead cover $300, leaving $150 of the $450 fare to pay. The assumed transfer leaves $50 to pay, saving another $100 for the same miles. In either option Maya still has 18,000 miles. She chooses the transfer only if the actual award, transfer ratio, and booking terms make this comparison work.
If the cash flight were only $300 but the award stayed at 30,000 miles plus $50, the travel credit would be better: it could cover the whole eligible $300 purchase, while the award would still require $50. The best route changes with the fare.
Double Cash: a $480 trip fund
Ben earns 1 ThankYou Point per dollar when making purchases and another as he pays those purchases. With $24,000 of qualifying purchases fully paid, the combined total is 48,000 points, equivalent to $480 cash back. The card has no annual fee.
Ben plans a $600 hotel stay. Redeeming the rewards as cash and directing $480 toward the hotel leaves $120 to fund from his budget. He can compare the full hotel prices and cancellation rules across booking channels without needing an airline transfer.
Before using a different redemption, Ben checks its cash equivalent. If an account checkout offered only $384 of value for the same 48,000 points, choosing that option would give up $96 versus the available $480 cash redemption.
If Ben later considers another Citi card for additional redemption options, he compares the actual extra value with that card’s fee. Adding a card is worthwhile only if the benefits he will use exceed the cost.
Discover it Miles: $360 for travel or cash
Sam earns 1.5 miles per dollar. The $2,000 monthly budget generates 3,000 miles a month and 36,000 over a year. At 100 miles per dollar, those miles provide $360 as cash or travel credit. Discover it Miles has no annual fee.
Sam has a planned $360 eligible travel expense. The regular annual earnings can cover that amount through the available redemption route. If Sam prefers redeeming for cash and paying for travel normally, the same 1-cent value means there is no need to invent a more complex airline-transfer strategy.
The separate first-year Miles Match can change a new cardholder’s result, but Sam’s ongoing-spending example does not include it. That keeps the comparison useful after the promotional year.
Compare the annual totals
These are baseline results for the same budget, before any better-value transfer in Maya’s story or other card benefits. They compare travel-credit or cash value, not a universal valuation of every point.
Venture’s transfer flexibility can matter when a useful award beats the baseline. Double Cash offers a strong simple cash result here. Discover it Miles offers a straightforward way to cover travel at a fixed value. Different spending categories, benefits, and fees can change the result.
| Card | Rewards from $24,000 | Baseline usable value | Annual fee | Baseline after fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capital One Venture | 48,000 miles | $480 travel value | $95 | $385 |
| Citi Double Cash | 48,000 ThankYou Points | $480 cash back | $0 | $480 |
| Discover it Miles | 36,000 miles | $360 cash / travel credit | $0 | $360 |
